Psychoanalytic view on phenomenon of rhythm and implications to music pedagogy
Abstract
The theoretical foundations for studying rhythm from the psychoanalytic perspective comprise the work of C.G. Jung and the post Jungians, and related infant research. The main focus is music flow as the movement of energy between the conscious and unconscious through the lenses of Jungian energy view. The related concepts are: universal organising patterns (archetypes), complexes, the intersubjective field, coenesthetic communication and representations of interactions which have been generalized (RIGs). The aim of this paper is to deepen understanding of rhythm phenomena and its role in the formation of primal relational patterns. The study contributes to the academic body of knowledge by establishing a new foundation for studying rhythm in music pedagogy. The implications of application of new knowledge are in developing new practical methods in the pedagogical approach to rhythm within music education and as a wider part of developmental work with children and adults.
