Uticaj planirane dve linije metro sistema na ublažavanje klimatskih promena u Beogradu
Impact of the planned two lines of the metro system on the mitigation of climate changes in Belgrade
Abstract
This paper analyzes the potential contribution of constructing two planned metro lines in Belgrade to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the mitigation of climate change. By presenting the current state of air quality, the growth of motorization, and the structure of traffic-related emissions, the paper highlights the need for sustainable public transport solutions. Data on the expected reduction of CO₂, NOx, and PM emissions following the construction of the metro lines are used, with reference to international experiences. The impact of reduced traffic intensity during the 2020 state of emergency is also analyzed, demonstrating a direct link between traffic load and air quality. The results suggest that the metro, as a high-capacity and environmentally friendly system, could significantly contribute to the reduction of total emissions and to increasing the city's resilience to climate change. The implementation of the metro system, combined with other sustainable mobility measures and the reorganization of public transport services to support the metro, would represent a key step toward creating a healthier and more resilient urban space in Belgrade.
