Abstract
Climatic and hydrological factors such as temperature, precipitation and flow play significant roles in shaping the physical and chemical characteristics of river water. This paper investigates the influence of these parameters on the water quality of the Tisa River in Serbia. Measurements were performed on a monthly basis, and the period 2008-2021 was analyzed. A correlation analysis was performed between each hydrological station (Martonoš, Novi Bečej and Titel) and the nearest meteorological station (Senta, Bečej and Zrenjanin). The variability of the following water quality parameters was analyzed: general parameters (pH and suspended solids), oxygen balance parameters (DO, BOD, COD, and total organic carbon), nutrients (nitrates, nitrites, orthophosphates, ammonium ions and total nitrogen) and salinity parameters (sulphates, chlorides and electrical conductivity) in relation to climatic (temperature and precipitation) and hydrological (fl ow) parameters in the Tisa River, section in Serbia. The obtained results clearly show that the climatic parameters and fl ow do not have a significant mutual relationship with the physical-chemical parameters that determine the water quality on the Tisa River. In other words, antropogenic action significantly reduced the quality of the Tisa River. Certain influences between climatic, hydrological and physico-chemical parameters are noticeable, and they are most expressed between flow and suspended materials (0.504), dissolved O2 and water and air temperature (-0.919), nutrients (NO3, NO2 and total N) and water and air temperature (0.795), as well as flow and chlorine (-0.539). Understanding these relationships is crucial for effective water resource management and environmental conservation eff orts. Through comprehensive analysis and data interpretation, this research aims to provide insights into the complex interactions between climatic and hydrologic variables and water quality parameters, contributing to the development of strategies for sustainable river ecosystem management. Continuous monitoring is also necessary to implement effective adaptation measures that promote the long-term sustainability of freshwater resources.
