About the origin of species counterpoint and their treatment in schoolbooks

Abstract
This paper is based on old music-theoretical treatises and schoolbooks. Illuminated insufficiently studied aspects of teaching practice. The aim is to examine the genesis of species counterpoint and their manifestation in schoolbooks. This teaching method haz its roots in the Middle Ages, with gradual crystallization during the Renaissance. Species counterpoint has remained in use until today, often with various modifications, which will be discussed in this paper. By researching the identity of methodical approaches on the subject Vocal counterpoint, a better understanding of its particular aspects will be achieved. The results of the research can be used to improve teaching. Treatment of learning counterpoint as a process, in which various changes have occurred over time, will enable a better understanding of the reasons of the use of certain teaching methods.
