Abstract
Since the beginning of human life in this world, there has been death, and even graves or mezarje, as they are called in Islamic tradition. And all nations have marked the eternal resting places of their deceased in different ways in their development. The erection of tombstones was in accordance with the economic and cultural development of the place and the material condition of the families. Therefore, the cultural and historical heritage of the Bosniaks of Polimlje, among other things, consists of nishani as traditional tombstones. These nishani tell us much more than we can even assume. From the XVIII century to 1912, a large number of Islamic tombstones were created in the area of Polimlje, many of which have disappeared due to various circumstances, while a number have been preserved. Nishani are very important monuments of our culture and witnesses of a bygone era. This paper aims to present to the public basic information about some of the most significant types of nishani in the area of Prijepolje, Priboj, and Nova Varoš, their time of origin, and the meaning of the epitaphs inscribed on them. With this work, the author wishes to point out the importance of old tombstones as monuments of national culture and their symbolism and specificity, which are exclusively related to the aforementioned area.
