Abstract
In order to get the most precise answers to all the open questions about music pedagogy and the professional identity of music pedagogues, we decided to carry out an empirical research in which the participants were music teachers employed at music academies or other higher education institutions with music department. The general aim of the research was to examine the perception of the professional identity of music pedagogues from the perspective of music teachers. The research results show that the term "music pedagogue" refers to specialists who have specialized education and teach music in general and music schools, or music and music pedagogical courses at academies and faculties. Music pedagogy has a recognizable problem of research, which as a profession differs from other similar disciplines, and knowledge in the field of music pedagogy is scientifically based and provides the basis for professional music-pedagogical activities. In order for music pedagogy to be called a profession, it is necessary to equalize the competences of music pedagogues, to build a professional-ethical code that will be recognized by all members of the music-pedagogical profession, and to make greater efforts to social support for the professional activities of music pedagogues or to gain a greater reputation pedagogue in society.
